Norwegian ambassador visits historic fishing port in Ningbo

The Norwegian Ambassador to China, Vebjorn Dysvik, visited the ancient fishing port of Shipu in Xiangshan county, Ningbo, engaging in a cultural exchange that bridged maritime traditions and sustainability.

His visit began at the Shipu Ancient City Command Center, where digital displays illustrated the fishing port's modernization. Meanwhile a discussion was held to reinforce the growing collaboration between China and Norway in sustainable maritime development. Norway's Nordic Aqua's chairman also shared plans for a Salmon Experience Pavilion, merging Norwegian fjord aquaculture with Shipu's traditional fishing customs.

In the historic town, Dysvik explored Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) coastal defense relics and century-old streets. Fujian Street's ancient camphor trees and Wanxing Street's unique firewalls — designed for theft and fire prevention — captured his interest. He also witnessed Shipu's vibrant fish lantern dance, a lively tradition performed during local festivities.

The ambassador's visit concluded at Shilang's residence, where he participated in fish rubbing, an ancient art form originating from Song Dynasty (960-1279).

He carefully painted and pressed a fresh fish onto paper, revealing intricate details when he lifted the sheet. Traditionally, these prints symbolize abundance and prosperity.

Overall, the cross-cultural dialogue was said to underscore the deepening ties between China and Norway, fostering shared understanding through maritime heritage and sustainable development.
