The Ningbo Museum launched the Auspicious Bronze Thousands of Miles Away: Special Exhibition on the Bronze Civilization of Southwest China on July 22.

The exhibition is displaying 165 very special artifacts from 17 institutions from across Southwest China.

Highlighting the region's vibrant bronze culture from the Shang (c.16th century-11th century BC) to Han (206 BC-220) dynasties, it features some remarkable relics from Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi.

For the first time, artifacts from the renowned Sanxingdui and Jinsha sites are on display in Ningbo. Sanxingdui's bronze masks and human figures — characterized by exaggerated facial features — are captivating visitors with their surreal charm. Meanwhile, Jinsha's gold foils and ceremonial items reflect a rich continuation of the ancient Shu legacy.

Beyond Sichuan, the exhibition explores Yunnan's Dian culture, with bronze shell containers featuring sculpted scenes of ritual and daily life — micro-histories preserved in metal.

Elsewhere, Guizhou and Guangxi's artifacts blend Central Plains influences with local aesthetics, including unique weaponry and musical instruments.

The exhibition emphasizes Southwest China's dynamic role in cultural exchanges — both with the Central Plains and neighboring Southeast Asia — showcasing how bronze art became a vessel of cross-cultural dialogue.

Visitors can engage with a Sanxingdui VR experience and explore themed cultural products, from stationery to children's toys. The exhibition runs through to Oct 19, with extended summer hours to encourage evening visits.

Opening hours: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm from Tuesday to Sunday (except Fridays) and until 5:00 pm on Fridays

Price: 60 yuan ($8.36)
