Russian turns village in Ningbo into cross-cultural art haven

In Ruo'ao village, Ninghai county, Zhejiang province, a vibrant cultural exchange has taken root. Russian artist Anna Andronova was invited to hold a solo exhibition in the historic village, blending international aesthetics with rural vitalization.

Ruo'ao village is recognized as a typical example of the protection and development of traditional Chinese villages in 2024. With support from Zhejiang's cultural envoy program and university collaborations, the village has introduced artist residencies, exhibitions and community art spaces that actively involve locals in creative life.

Andronova, who teaches at the University College London and at the China Academy of Art, was drawn to Ruo'ao's serene landscapes and architectural charm. Her art — grounded in the idea of enriching life through creativity — aligns with the village's vision of using art to energize its identity.

Residents and tourists immersed themselves in the exhibition, many experiencing contemporary art for the first time. Andronova's approachable style and heartfelt storytelling encouraged deeper engagement. One villager even shared aspirations to paint the rice fields near her home.

Beyond showcasing art, Andronova offered suggestions to further elevate Ruo'ao's artistic identity, including blending local cultural symbols into modern works and hosting international artist exchanges.

The village's cultural envoy Ren Tian envisions Ruo'ao as a global hub for art-driven rural renewal. It's felt that the exhibition is only the beginning of its journey as a canvas for creativity and cross-cultural dialogues.
