In Ningbo, Zhejiang province, martial arts master Shi Lei has spent decades teaching and promoting Chinese martial arts to students of all ages.
At 63, Shi has dedicated over 20 years to public instruction, training more than 4,000 students, from children to seniors.
"Martial arts should start with the young," she says, encouraging students to practice with both focus and joy.
On a recent afternoon at a community holiday school, more than 10 children eagerly followed Shi's guidance, copying stances and movements as she demonstrated the next steps.
Born into a family of martial artists, Shi learned from her grandfather, a recognized master, and later from her mother. She preserves family manuals that detail exercises, principles of movements, and health tips.
"These texts aren't just about fighting — they teach discipline and well-being," she explains. From a young age, Shi would train with her family, gradually developing a lifelong passion for martial arts.
Shi continues to teach across local schools, community centers, and senior universities, also welcoming enthusiasts from other provinces and countries, including Spain. Through her teaching, Shi aims to preserve traditional martial arts and inspire future generations.
"Each generation has its mission," she says, "We not only pass on skills but also promote the spirit of Chinese culture and wellness."
