A new community martial arts program in Ningbo is bringing international students together to learn Chinese kung fu while fostering cross-cultural connections.
At Wenzhu Community in Jiangbei district, the practice room is filled with energetic shouts in a mix of Mandarin and English. Students from diverse countries train with focus and determination, following step-by-step demonstrations from instructor Sun Ji. Sun carefully breaks down complex movements, provides individual corrections, and emphasizes key details for each form.
The program, jointly launched by Wenzhu Community and Ningbo University's International College, started in November and will run for three months. About 30 students are participating, supported by six Chinese volunteers who assist with translation. Classes are designed not only to teach martial arts but also to create a regular social hub for youth from China and abroad.
"Practice makes perfect," said Aleksandra Kotova from Russia after performing her first set of movements, while India's Hafsa Mohammed Mujahid joined the class despite a hand injury, eager to pursue his long-held dream of learning Chinese martial arts.
A community representative said, "With many international students nearby, we wanted to help them truly connect with the neighborhood rather than just live next door. Martial arts became a perfect bridge."
