Ningbo hits million‑dwt milestone
Ningbo's maritime sector has achieved a landmark breakthrough as Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co became the city first shipping enterprise to surpass 1 million deadweight tons (DWT) of self-owned capacity.
The milestone was confirmed on Dec 26, when the vessel Ningyuan Toumen received its operation certificate, marking the full deployment of eight newly built 1,000‑twenty-foot-equivalent-unit (TEU) container ships this year.
The achievement signals a major leap forward for Ningbo's homegrown shipping enterprises and represents a key moment in the city's efforts to build a competitive, modern maritime economy.
In addition to its self-owned fleet, Ningbo Ocean operates a large number of leased vessels. The company now manages 113 ships with a total capacity exceeding 1.8 million DWT and more than 100,000 TEUs of container capacity. This scale places the company first in Zhejiang, third among Chinese mainland liner operators, and 24th globally.
The rapidly expanding fleet has strengthened the company's route network. Centered on Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, Ningbo Ocean now connects 51 major domestic ports and serves markets across Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. It operates 42 liner services with 139 weekly sailings, providing stable capacity for regional and international supply chains.
From January to November, the company recorded year‑on‑year growth of over 14 percent in container volume, cargo throughput, and freight turnover — reflecting strong operational momentum.
