Ningbo turns to drones for island logistics

Ningbo has launched its first commercial drone logistics route at sea, marking a major step in applying unmanned aerial technology to coastal and island supply chains.

A heavy-lift drone lifted off from a wharf in Xiangshan county on Jan 13, carrying a cooler filled with fresh seafood to a guesthouse across the water. Within minutes, it completed the delivery and returned with freshly brewed coffee.

The drone stabilizes cargo using a hoist system and is equipped with sensors, redundant systems, and a parachute to ensure safe operation in wind and sea spray. It can carry up to 80 kilograms. 

"This used to take more than 20 minutes by ferry. But now the drone completes the trip in just three minutes," said Weng Dandan, the guesthouse owner.

Pan Wenda, general manager of Ningbo Feifang Technology, added that every flight is monitored in real time, providing early warnings and comprehensive tracking to ensure safety. 

Zhou Hua, a Xiangshan county transport bureau official, noted that future operations will be regular and integrated with delivery platforms to improve the efficiency of transporting goods to islands.

The network also completed a trial delivery to Hua'ao Island, demonstrating how drones can provide reliable, timely access to remote locations. Five takeoff and landing points have been established, with three automated flight routes under continuous monitoring. The system is expected to support seafood cold chains, emergency supplies, medical transport, and other practical applications, offering a model for coastal drone logistics.
