The timeless Chinese classic Butterfly Lovers echoed through the streets of Geneva on June 7 as the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra staged a surprise flash mob performance in front of the Palais des Nations.
The orchestra's performance drew the attention of passersby from around the world. Many slowed their pace to listen, while others stopped to record the performance, creating a heartwarming scene of cultural connection. The graceful melody brought a touch of Chinese romance and poetic beauty to the international city.
The performance was part of the orchestra's visit to Switzerland for activities marking the United Nations' International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. On June 8, the orchestra also took part in a special concert, showcasing the richness of Chinese culture and fostering mutual understanding through music.
"Seeing people from different countries stop and listen gave me a true appreciation of the power of music to transcend borders," said Zong Yang, assistant concertmaster of the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra.
For cellist Bao Wenjie, the occasion was particularly meaningful. Having studied in Switzerland a decade ago, he said he felt honored to return and share Ningbo's spirit of openness and cultural vitality with audiences from around the world.
