Ningbo Yueju Opera premieres new work online after typhoon disruption

Ningbo Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe premiered its new production Hanjiang Pass online on Aug 8 after Typhoon Dolphin disrupted the planned theatrical debut, giving audiences a chance to watch the performance through digital platforms.

The online premiere drew more than 200,000 views across four platforms, far exceeding the audience capacity of a single live show.

The production offers a fresh take on the legend of Fan Lihua, a female general from the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Rather than focusing only on the traditional romantic storyline, the play highlights Fan's personal journey, independence, and commitment to a greater cause.

Performed by young actress Xu Qiuying, the character is portrayed as a woman who makes her own decisions and remains true to her ideals despite various setbacks.

Hanjiang Pass also marks an effort by the troupe to explore a more dynamic form of Yueju Opera, combining the genre's signature singing style with demanding martial arts choreography. Actors underwent intensive training for combat scenes, with most of the rehearsal time devoted to improving movement and stage action.

Founded in 1956, Ningbo Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe has produced acclaimed works while continuing to experiment with new formats. The troupe said it will expand the production's reach through touring performances, online broadcasts, and cultural projects.
