Ningbo swimmers claim gold and bronze on Asian Games opening day

Ningbo swimmers Yu Yiting and Wang Shun made the podium on the first day of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sept 20, with Yu taking relay gold and Wang earning bronze in the men's 200-meter individual medley.

Yu led China's women's 4x100m freestyle relay alongside Zhang Yufei, Cheng Yujie and Wu Qingfeng, finishing her leg in 53.39 seconds and putting China in an early lead. 

The team stayed ahead through the remaining three legs and touched the wall in 3:33.10, breaking the 2023 Asian Games record of 3:33.96 in Hangzhou.

This victory has given Yu her first gold medal of the Games. She also won gold in the same relay at the Hangzhou Asian Games, finishing with three golds and one silver.

Wang, competing at his fifth Asian Games, finished the men's 200m individual medley in 1:57.14 to take bronze. The 32-year-old also won the event at the previous two Asian Games.

Lin Xinyu, who began her swimming career in Ningbo before switching to triathlon, won the women's individual triathlon in 57:37, marking China's first Asian Games title in the event in 20 years.
