Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in Zhejiang province handled more than 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo through sea-rail intermodal transport in the first three quarters of 2026, up 8.5 percent year-on-year. September saw a record monthly volume of over 200,000 TEUs, while Sept 26 set a new daily record of 8,878 TEUs.
This means that nearly 6,000 TEUs of cargo travel by rail from inland regions to the port each day.
The port's sea-rail network now comprises 113 routes, connecting 70 prefecture-level cities across 16 provincial-level regions.
Growth has been driven by expanded transport links and improved infrastructure. New services include a sea-rail route from Yiwu to the Middle East and an export rail service from Aksu in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Meanwhile, an expansion project at Chuanshan Port Railway Station, completed in January, doubled the scale of its facilities by adding four arrival and departure tracks and two loading tracks.
Operational coordination has also helped improve efficiency, with the port pre-positioning empty containers and aligning train schedules with vessel departures ahead of peak shipping periods.
