A handmade silk vest from Ningbo, Zhejiang province, featuring the "birds paying homage to the phoenix" design, was gifted to Colombia's first lady, Veronica Alcocer, by Chinese Ambassador to Colombia Zhu Jingyang on March 13.
Alcocer was delighted, admiring the intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. She exclaimed, "I love it—it's so beautiful!" and held up the vest enthusiastically.
According to Ambassador Zhu, the vest was custom-made using traditional Chinese craftsmanship, blending two national intangible cultural heritages: Hongbang tailoring and gold-and-silver embroidery. These techniques symbolize the richness of Chinese culture and its auspicious meanings.
Gold-and-silver embroidery dates back to the Tang dynasty (618-907) and is renowned for its meticulousness and elegance. Hongbang tailoring, originated along the Fenghua River in Ningbo, represents a seamless fusion of traditional Chinese sewing techniques with Western-style tailoring.
The vest's silk is regarded as a treasure of China and was once referred to as the "Jewel of the Orient". The phoenix, prominently featured in the design, is a highly symbolic in traditional Chinese culture, representing nobility, prosperity, and harmony.
This cultural exchange marks the 45th anniversary of China-Colombia diplomatic relations. Earlier this year, Ningbo representatives participated in Chinese New Year events in Colombia, strengthening cultural ties.
The vest is a testament to Ningbo's rich traditions and symbolizes not only artistic excellence but also unity and goodwill. The combination of luxurious materials and time-honored craftsmanship reflects the enduring beauty and significance of Chinese culture on the global stage.
