A group of international sailors recently stepped ashore in Beilun district, Ningbo, for a unique Dragon Boat Festival experience that acquainted them with traditional Chinese culture.
The event welcomed crew members from countries such as Montenegro and Ukraine with a special "shore reception" designed for visiting seafarers.
Volunteers introduced the festival's customs in English, explaining how bundles of mugwort are traditionally hung on doors during Dragon Boat Festival to repel insects and symbolize wishes for health and good fortune.
The sailors then tried making their own mugwort bundles and herbal massage hammers. While some found the craft surprisingly challenging, others quickly mastered the technique and eagerly tested the fragrant herbal hammers on their shoulders, offering enthusiastic praise.
Many participants were fascinated by the fresh scent of mugwort, stopping to smell the herbs and even practicing the Chinese words for "mugwort" and "Dragon Boat Festival" with the volunteers.
According to the organizer, the initiative aims to provide visiting sailors with a warm welcome while introducing them to Chinese traditions. Similar cultural activities are planned for future festivals such as Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival, ensuring every stop in Ningbo offers not only rest, but also a memorable cultural experience.
